Thousands of scarecrows descend upon Meaford from mid-September to mid-October for the annual invasion. Come out on  October 1st for a great night of family fun! The OPP Golden Helmets Motorcyle Precision Team kicks things off from 5:00 to 5:45 on Sykes Street. The Rotary Club parade procced the Golden Helments from  downtown at 6pm ending at the Harbor Pavillion followed by the Scotiabank Family Festival from 6:30 to 9pm at the harbour. Enjoy scarecrows, bands, floats, cars, motorcycles,food,contest and much more!

A Good Life Lived, an Enduring Legacy Left

Frederick Stanley Haines, born in Meaford, March 29, 1879, died November 21, 1960

The exhibition will consist of approximately seventy-five works by Frederick S. Haines. There will be samples of his etchings, aquatints, watercolours and many oils. The show will be held in three venues in the town of Meaford:  Meaford Hall, Georgian Bay Secondary School, and the Meaford Museum, from Friday September 10 to Thursday September 30. Some of the works in on show in Meaford Hall will be for sale.

It is certainly true and unfortunate that in our culture we tend to undervalue artists, unless they have been heavily promoted or commercially built up as celebrities.  It is also true that we rather quickly forget the lives and achievements of most of our worthy predecessors, even when they had been recognized and honoured during their lifetimes. Perhaps that is why it is ever so gratifying to re-discover the life well lived and the rich, enduring legacy left by Frederick S. Haines, a most accomplished, prolific and versatile artist, equally good at portraits, figure painting (gold medal from Academie Royale des Beaux Arts in Antwerp), landscapes and his beloved animals, as well as a successful engraver and print maker.  As if that were not enough, he also proved himself to be a most able educator, mentor and administrator.  Haines was the president of the Ontario Society of Artists, a founding member of Canadian Society of Painters of Watercolour, a founding member of Canadian Society of Etchers and Printers, the curator of the Art Gallery of Ontario and a well loved and most respected principal of the Ontario College of Art.  At a young age he was accepted as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and later became its president and by resigning from that “creakily venerable institution,” he attained a moral victory that led to the rewriting of its constitution.

Lynn and David Freeman have been farming in Meaford Ontario, since 1986. In 1998 The Freeman’s started growing garlic, which they processed into a variety of Gourmet food seasoning spices. Dr. Jackson’s research confirmed that the organic garlic grown on Freeman farms contains higher levels of allicin than any other garlic tested. It also confirms that freeze-drying is the best method for retention of high levels.  Dr. Holub proved that garlic was effective in lowering cholesterol in humans.

Freeman Farms is enriched with a heavy mineral and clay content in the soil, producing organic garlic with naturally high levels of allicin. This high-quality raw garlic is not by itself sufficient to get a respectable finished product. The organic garlic is freeze-dried to retain its properties and extend shelf life. Other conventional methods of drying cause most of the value in garlic to be lost during the process. David and Lynn’s garlic preserves up to 80% of the allicin in its freeze-dried form. There are currently no commercial garlic products for human or animal consumption, which have enough allicin concentrations to be  effective to an extent.

A demand for garlic based feed supplements of high allicin content for horses already exists, and the potential market for such feed supplements for meat producing animals like cattle and pigs even higher. The use of antibiotics to meat producing livestock was banned in 2006 by the European Union and is likely to be banned in North America as well.

Many people today are searching for nuraceuticals because of apprehensions over antibiotic resistance, as well as the side effects and cost of antibiotics. The antibiotics available to veterinarians are no longer as effective as they were in the past. Most veterinarians believe that nutraceuticals, besides being effective as medicine for infections, were beneficial for the treatment of chronic conditions (eg. arthritis and respiratory aliments). They also believe that such products help boost the immune system preventing infections, repel pests, and even improve hair quality. The Freeman’s organic freeze-dried garlic will be in high demand for the maintance of good health and prevention of chronic diseases in both humans and animals, as an alternative to antibiotics for animals. Horses and animals raised for human consumption (cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, etc.) would probably be healthier if they were dosed with garlic instead of antibiotics or in combination with them.

People are likely to benefit from eating the meat of edible domestic animals treated in this manner. Many owners of horses (racing horses and pleasure horses alike) all over the world (e.g. in Canada, the U.S.A., Europe, and Australia) would be willing to use freeze-dried garlic products containing consistently high levels of allicin which would benefit the health of their animals. Ontario’s new strategy to restrict inappropriate use of opioid painkillers like OxyContin could discourage doctors from prescribing them when needed, leaving patients with chronic pain to suffer needlessly, pain experts say.

The province announced recently it will start tracking painkillers known as opioids — such as oxycodone, morphine and codeine — as well as stimulants and sedatives.

But doctors who specialize in controlling pain say while abuse is a problem, the undertreatment of pain by withholding opioids is worse.

When people are left in pain, the cost to society eclipses cancer and HIV in terms of lost hours, productivity and cost of care, said Dr. Norm Buckley, chair of the department of anesthesia at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

Anticonvulsants and antidepressants are effective pain control options, but Buckley said opioids such as morphine and OxyContin work best.

“Opioids are still far and away the most effective drugs we have for pain, and they should be used to a greater extent,” said Buckley, who is also director of the Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre at McMaster.

“But at the same time you have outside observers looking at it and saying, ‘People are going crazy prescribing opioids. We have to do something about that!’”

Tracking opioid use as Ontario is proposing could provide useful information, Buckley acknowledged.

In Quebec, opioid use doubled over 14 years, said Kristen Reidel, a master’s student in epidemiology at Montreal’s McGill University.

Meaford Aviculturist David T. Longo had the thrill of a lifetime recently when his pair of rare Red-billed Toucans successfully hatched a pair of eggs.

Longo said the chicks at his St. Vincent Bird Park are the first Red-billed Toucans bred in Canada.

On August 19 he discovered a pair of eggs in the nesting area of his pair of Toucans.

“I just about dropped the flashlight in the box. I was using a flash light and mirror to look in,” he said.

His Toucans were caught live in South America and brought to Canada. Longo said it is very difficult to get Toucans to breed in our country.

“To court and then reproduce they need large areas and they need to be outdoors,” he said.

Being in Ontario is a disadvantage because the birds can only be outside six or seven months of the year. He has had the pair of Toucans since 2004 and this is the first time they’ve ever produced eggs.

“I knew they were doing a lot of activity in the nest and four or five days later they hatched,” he said.

The chicks are well hidden in the bottom of their nest. Longo said, during an interview on August 26, that he isn’t sure if there are still two chicks. At least one chick could be heard chirping from inside the nest.

When your tween starts talking back, or yelling at you, or rolling her eyes every time you start to open your mouth, you’re bound to feel shock, then maybe anger, followed closely by hurt.

“In the beginning you try to chalk it up to a reason, just as you did when she was younger: Is she hungry? Overtired?” says Christina Bess, the mom of a 9- and a 12-year-old in Maplewood, New Jersey. “And then you realize the reason is, she’s a tween.”

This may be especially true if it seems that your kid has gone from happy to snappy before her time. After all, this is the kind of behavior you expect from 13- and 14-year-olds — not kids who haven’t even hit the double digits. But the onset of sassiness is not your fault.

With adolescence looming, kids naturally feel compelled to start going their own way.

“They’re not intentionally being disobedient,” says Mary-Ann Lowry, a parenting coach and educator from Thousand Oaks, California. “They’re on a path toward ‘individuation,’ when they really try to figure out who they are separate from you.”

And then, of course, there are myriad outside influences. Thanks to cell phones and texting, for example, tweens are developing closer bonds with their peer groups and, as a result, pushing away from their parents at earlier ages.

Plus, many TV shows and even books aimed at this age group often portray adults as clueless fools — as any parent who’s been on the receiving end of “Duh!” can attest.

It’s worth noting, too, that regardless of when tween ‘tude sets in, boys and girls tend to act out differently.

“Girls get dramatic and overreact, while boys alternate between withdrawing and being defiant,” says Lowry.
