Gerry Flowers – Maurauder

gaf_vetreunion02_170My motivations for joining the Marauders are both simple and complex.

At one level, it offers an intriguing adventure and the opportunity to test myself, both physically and mentally. I am naturally attracted to the opportunity of interacting with some fascinating people from a diverse range of backgrounds and the attendant comraderie and interest.

As a pilot, the mission represents a logistical puzzle, and perhaps the opportunity of creative problem-solving and developing new approaches.

At a higher level, the Marauders raison d’etre offers one the opportunity to transcend mere self-interest and contribute to something significant and worthwhile.

The Marines pride themselves on never leaving a man behind, to a certain extent, this mission is the fulfillment of that covenant.

We are recovering the fallen, and hopefully bringing closure to their families and nation. As a former Marine sergeant, I understand a family’s pain at losing their brother, son, father – how much worse to never know what happened to them or where they rest.

If the mission were to educate the world about the tremendous sacrifice made by these individuals and their families, that would be success beyond my wildest dreams.
