The Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
Police officers across the country play a leadership role in organizing the Canadian Cancer Society’sCops for Cancer events by involving the community in other fundraising and cancer awareness activities.
This program started in 1994 when an Edmonton police officer with a shaved head posed for a picture with a young cancer patient.
The officer wanted to support the boy, who was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss. Other officers joined in and shaved their heads.
Since then police officers from across Canada have held Cops for Cancerfundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society. Cops both men and women agree to have their heads shaved at a public place such as shopping malls or city hall squares. The police officers gather pledges from co-workers, friends and family.
Cops for Cancer is still going strong. Today the program includes head shaves, coin collections, golf tournaments, BBQs, softball tournaments, ironman teams, road races and other events across the country.
Congratulations and thanks to all those who have participated in this event. Together you have helped to raise over $32.8 million dollars in the fight against cancer!
