On behalf of the Meaford & District Chamber of Commerce, Meaford Municipal Farmers’ Market, Meaford BIA and friends in the community, a David Harper Memorial Tree Dedication will take place on Friday, June 19th at 3pm. The ceremony will coincide with the opening of the Farmers’ Market next to the Meaford Harbour Pavilion.
A sugar maple tree and stone with a memorial plaque will be officially dedicated by Mayor Francis Richardson to recognize David Harper’s contributions to the community. “Given that David Harper was one of the founding vendors of the Meaford Municipal Farmers’ Market Association and that he was an important member of our Board of Directors, I can’t think of a more appropriate place to have a memorial tree than the Pavilion area at the Meaford Harbour where so many local residents and visitors to our town came to know this fine man. David was always full of energy and was very welcoming to all visitors at the Farmers’ Market”, says Farmers’ Market Manager Stephen Vance. David Harper was also the co-founder of Meaford’s year round 100 Mile Market and co-owner of Stoneyfield Elk Farm with his partner Barbara Kay. Since moving to the Meaford area five years ago, the pair has exhibited proactive leadership through their heavy involvement with agri-business, specifically the local food movement in Grey and Bruce Counties.
David Harper passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2009 at the age of 55.
