ONE members around the world put forward an exceptional effort trying to convince the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to sell a small amount of their gold reserves to help developing countries hit hard by the financial crisis.
Late last week, anti-poverty campaigner Bob Geldof delivered our petition with over 60,000 signatures to IMF Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Almost 10,000 of those petition signers went on to send emails directly to the IMF.
The IMF hasn’t yet delivered what we asked for, but in meetings today with ONE staff, they confirmed that they are actively looking at options to increase resources for low-income countries and are exploring ways of ensuring that provision of new resources does not lead to a debt problem for Africa in future years. The process is still moving along, thanks in no small part to your efforts.
Rest assured, we won’t let up pressure until we get the right outcome for Africa.
